Using a taper turning attachment can solve these problems. The basic concept here is to set up a bar that can be angled with respect to the lathe axis. On the bar is a follower that connects rigidly to the cross slide (after disengaging the lead screw). Thus, as the carriage moves along the bed using auto feed, it accurately follows the angle of the bar with respect to the lathe axis.
