There have been many articles in books and magazines for 'sensitive' lever drilling attachments for attaching to the tailstock so making such 'drill cleaning' both easier and quicker. The disadvantage of such attachments, however, is their limited amount of travel, so drilling deeply requires the tailstock to be repositioned at intervals until the drill has reached its final depth. Eventually the same situation in clearing the swarf will be arrived at, but in this case the tailstock will have to be moved along the lathe bed after the drill is retracted. The maximum length of travel of the U3 tailstock ram is almost one and a quarter inches which is adequate for most purposes but winding the handwheel backwards and forwards over this distance takes up valuable time.
