DRILL SHARPENING TIG John Shepherd describes his own design and puts it into practice

This project came about because of a quest to find a drill sharpening device that gave satisfactory and repeatable results. I was not looking for the ultimate in precision, just a practical design that was reasonable in terms of cost and, if there was nothing available commercially, not too difficult or time consuming to build. The result is shown left. Before someone jumps in and asks why I need a jig at all and suggests that I should learn to sharpen drills by hand, let me say that I can do a reasonable job by hand but I suspect that, like many others who pursue engineering as a pastime, I do not have the benefit of being well practiced in the art. If some of the descriptions and video demonstrations of hand sharpening I have seen on the internet are anything to go by there is a lot of misinformation out there and the use of a jig that works will not be out of place in the home workshop.
