I've toyed with the idea of some sort of bar screwed into the gap between the bedways with a vertical sliding block that could be clamped at any location. This would then make contact with the saddle just below the bottom of the cross slide. When this option was thoroughly thought through, the method threw up more problems than the project was actually worth.
