The 'The Occasional Woodcutter' article by Dave Fenner in MEW 172, on the subject of refurbishing a Stanley No. 5 jack plane, brought back memories of a time 40 years ago when I was about to take up the offer of a place to train as a craft teacher at Sheffield City College of Education. Some weeks previously I had received, through the post, a list of the tools that we were expected to provide for ourselves, together with a drawing of the tool box that we needed to make in which to house them all.
