Cast Iron machine tables Grey cast iron is the material of choice for most machine tables that have Tee slots machined into them. Grey cast iron has less tensile strength and shock resistance than steel but its compressive strength is comparable to low and medium carbon steels. As cast iron is comparatively brittle, it is not suitable for purposes where flexibility is required. It is strong under compression but not under tension. The grey term comes from the appearance of a fractured surface.
