An advantage of the use of a metal shaper is that tools can be shaped from pieces of square HSS tool steel. Cutting gears in a shaper is one example of being able to grind a tool to the profile shape of the tooth without having to resort to a circular gear cutters and hobs. The 'Fellows' gear shaper followed on from a shaper design and was for many years a preferred method of shaping gear teeth. We therefore should not frown on the processes of the past but try to improve on them. Whilst a shaper may not be the most economical way of removing metal in a factory environment, in a model engineers workshop they can be just what is needed for the many operations that are performed to produce flat machined surfaces, or dovetail shapes.
