Having got part way through the build of a 3 inch scale model of a Rider-Ericson hot air engine, (see Model Engineer 4461 onwards), the power piston cylinder and displacer cylinders having been bored, I needed to put a suitable surface finish on the bore of the power piston cylinder liner and also to improve the appearance of the bore in the displacer cylinder. Although it is possible to buy a honing tool, for me this was a one off job and I did not wish to do this. A look in the J&L catalogue showed some hone tooling in the style of a rotary brush with abrasive balls, made for sizes 4 to 75mm; the 75mm size I needed is about £80 plus VAT. I have seen some three stone type honing tools advertised from time to time in MEW for about £30 and Machine Mart have a three legged glaze buster for about £ 27.00.1 thought about this for a while and came up with my own low cost solution (photo 1).
