X2 milling machine

I read with interest the articles on the X2 milling machine in MEW issues 199 and 201. I had two mills a C3 lathe and an R8 X2 head that I use on my CNC machine, all of them had smashed gears. I cut the large gear out of molybdenum loaded nylon and was going to cut the small change gear out of EN8 when I found that Amadeal Ltd sold some very nice steel gears for the machines at a price that made it not worth while cutting them as the small gear would have to be made in two bits and then fixed together after they had been cut. The new gears from Amadeal are 1.5 module whereas the plastic gears are 2.25 module; the steel gears being finer, run quieter than the plastic ones. I also fitted taper roller bearings to all of them and on the mills I fitted internal twin lip oil seals to stop anything falling into the bottom bearing. I also replaced the plastic bearing retaining plates with ones made out of 1/2 inch plate steel. These I made a very close fit to the spindle so they acted as seals.
