I have several permanent marker pens kicking around the shop; they are quicker than finding the marking blue and a brush when in a hurry. The mark not only dries quicker but is also a bit less likely to be removed by suds. The same solvent removes the mark, however. If you are using a scribing block (surface gauge) you will also need a rule mounting block to hold the rule vertical whilst picking up the dimension required. This is not easy and a loupe helps to see where the point is exactly on the rule. A vernier height gauge with a tungsten carbide scribing point fitted is much easier to use, again use of a loupe will make for more accurate settings.
