THE ULTRA-HIGH-CAPACITY TAPE CARTRIDGE BUSINESS: Some Comments on the Business to Date, and Some Thoughts on What Lies Ahead

In 2001, for the first time, data-tape drives and cartridges offering 100-110GB of native storage capacity became generally available. These products are just the first of an on-going progression of products, to be introduced at two-year intervals, with each new generation doubling the storage capacity and data-transfer rates provided by the previous generation. Assuming that the companies developing and promoting these products meet their self-imposed schedules, data-tape systems offering 800GB or larger storage native capacities, and 80MB/second or higher transfer rates, will become available sometime in 2007.
