Councils have been urged to look at what they could do better than outsourcers in the wake of the collapse of Carillion. The influential Institute for Government (IfG) think-tank said the collapse in 2018 demonstrated the 'dangers to the private sector taking on contracts it could not manage'. IfG senior researcher Tom Sasse said: 'After 40 years of more and more outsourcing, now is a good time for local authorities to look at what the private sector does well, and what they could do better themselves.' Councils from across the political spectrum have already brought a range of services back in-house, including cleaning, housing repair, highways maintenance, waste collection, IT and social care though spending data suggests changes have only been modest.
