A civil service trade union has called for a freeze on further job cuts in the Environment Agency (EA) following the spate of floods afflicting the country this winter. Prospect - which represents 34,000 government scientists, specialists and managers - has urged ministers to call an immediate moratorium on proposals to shed 1,500 jobs from the EA's 11,400 workforce by October. The headcount cuts were confirmed in last December's Autumn Statement and Prospect has estimated 550 EA employees working in flooding could lose their jobs.
