Leaders of two of the main political parties this week fired the starting gun for campaigning in this year's local government elections, ahead of county council polls on 2 May. Labour Party leader Ed Miliband demanded local authorities be given powers to veto the proliferation of high-street payday lenders and bookmakers' shops. Launching the Labour Party's local government election campaign in Ipswich on 8 April, Mr Miliband highlighted concerns that communities lack the power to curtail the clustering of certain shops viewed as having a damaging social impact.
