Communities secretary Sajid Javid has rejected accusations that his Whitehall department is too stretched to handle devolution bids. However, Mr Javid admitted to County Councils' Network (CCN) leaders at their annual conference this week: 'We should have responded earlier in the case of Solent but the General Election and then Grenfell made decisions slow. In the last few weeks we've been engaging with all areas. The DCLG [Department for Communities and Local Government] has seen a cut in resources but I'm comfortable at its current level.'
