Local government chiefs have urged national tax authorities be as efficient in collecting levies as councils - with a view to boosting annual tax take by £2obn and forestalling future spending cuts. Analysis by the Local Government Association indicates that if HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) matched local authority collection rates of 97.5% for council tax and business rates, the Exchequer would receive an extra £2obn each year.
