LGA chief defends chiefs 'astonishing' expenses

Council chief executives' use of personal expenses are 'part and parcel' of the job, the most senior official at the Local Government Association (LGA) has said. Outgoing LGA chief executive, John Ransford, this week defended council bosses' use of personal expenses following an investigation into the use of taxpayers' cash by senior town-hall officials, pub- lished by The Daily Telegraph. Freedom of Information responses sent to the newspaper by 340 councils showed local authority chief executives had since 2008 charged £2.6m expenses to corporate credit cards, around £1.2m since May 2010.
