Campaign launched to cut public energy use by 10%

The Treasury's commercial arm has launched a campaign to improve the way public bodies buy energy, aiming to slash bills by almost 10% over three years.The Office of Government Commerce wants to cut national and local government's £3.8bn energy bill by at least £320m by 2012, through the adoption of 'aggregated, flexible and risk-managed' procurement - or collaborative purchasing of gas, electricity and, possibly, oil.To help with the initiative, the OGC has also published new guidance on how to manage energy costs effectively, while meeting strict government targets on sustainability.Nigel Smith, OGC chief executive, said: 'The energy market can be extremely volatile,with prices varying on a daily basis. This can make it very difficult to manage budgets and control costs.
