Government 'must deal with top pay' says mayor

Middlesbrough's directly-elected mayor, Ray Mallon, has urged ministers - not town halls - to take a firm grip on senior officials' pay.Mr Mallon, an independ-ent mayor, said it was the Government's failure to stop senior salaries from spiralling upwards which was behind communities secretary Eric Pickles' cur-rent drive to restrain wage deals.'I do not argue that the salaries of some chief exec-utives in the country are too high. The Government has not intervened to deal with the problem,' he said.
