Councils Showed 'lack Of Skills' Over Iceland

A leading local government consultant claims he has uncovered an 'astonishing' lack of treasury management skills at major councils, following the Icelandic banking crisis. Howard Knight, former leader of the Labour Parry's local government unit, told the Commons CLG select committee 'the majority' of elected members with financial portfolios or scrutiny roles at councils caught out by the crisis had no 'professional training in finance or economies'. Speaking on 19 January, Mr Knight added that just half of members he has surveyed had undertaken even basic training covering local government finance.
