Electronic control is now a standard item on all modern production engines and anyone driving a modern vehicle has become accustomed to the smooth running and reliability that modern electronics deliver. The A-series and A-plus engines, prior to the introduction of the twin-point injection 'MPi' Minis, have always relied on a mechanically driven distributor. The majority of distributor-equipped A-series/A-plus engines use contact breaker points. Points can be unreliable and are not ideal, especially when much tuning of the engine is carried out.
