The name Downton is known to Mini fans worldwide as possibly the most significant tuning badge a Mini can wear. But not many people realise that Downton Engineering in fact came from the sleepy village of Downton in Wiltshire. Daniel Richmond and his partner Bunty opened up a garage there in 1947, apparently choosing that particular town because of the local salmon fishing! Initially they specialised in servicing and repairs, but gradually moved more into producing their own tuning kits. In the late Fifties they started to concentrate on BMC cars, A-series engines and of course the natural progression was to start tuning the Mini.
