In last month's issue we covered cylinder head gasket replacement. Most head gasket failures are caused by the engine overheating due to inefficiency or a breakdown of the cooling system. Most cooling system failures are caused by lack of maintenance. If you maintain yours properly the Mini is much less likely to break down or suffer the inconvenience and embarrassment of head gasket failure. Cooling system maintenance is very straightforward and well within the capabilities of the home mechanic. Almost any part of the cooling system can fail, including hoses which can collapse, perish and/ or burst. The bypass hose is often considered to be one of the earlier Mini's greatest problems but, almost without exception, if the hoses are changed before they perish they will never cause a problem. This includes the bypass hose, especially if the straight type is fitted.
