1959 And All That

In March 1959, Britain was still reeling from the terrible news that En Bbeetje by Teddy Scholte had won the highly prestigious 'Eurovision Song Contest'. In Coventry a certain distinguished motor magnate named Sir Leonard Lord was urging his development team ever onwards with their new small car project. The imported bubble cars that Leonard loathed so much were still much in evidence on British roads. As it happened, the only real link between the Luftwaffe and this post-war micro-cars was the name of Herr Messerschmitt. The T-G500 was really the work of the master engineer Fritz Feld. After the Second World War the 'Messerschmitt company was forbidden to make aircraft. When Feld approached Herr Messerschmitt, with an idea for making a mass-market version of an invalid carriage, the result was the vastly popular 1953 KR175 'Kabinroller' three-wheeler with, sensibly, two wheels up front.
