Front brakes work hardest when it comes to stopping a Mini. This is simply down to the laws of physics and leads to most mods and maintenance being carried out on the front brakes. As a result, the rear brakes tend to be ignored. Despite playing a secondary role, the rears are important. Keep them tip top. Rear brakes which are out of balance due to poor adjustment, a seized or leaking wheel cylinder or even a drum or lining fault can cause a Mini to veer to one side under braking which, although it will not be felt as fiercely as the same problem up front, will still range from unpleasant to lethal. An out-of-round drum can cause one wheel to lock up early and some drums wear to a conical cross section shape. These look fine but the shoes won't work efficiently. Maintaining rear brakes involves a lot more than just the items within the drum, i.e. linings and wheel cylinder.
