What better subject for an Anorak column than anoraks? Associated now with with outdoor pursuits such as motorsport, the anorak was originally invented by the Innuit Eskimos who lived above the Arctic Circle and needed a waterproof jacket to protect them when they were fishing. Although the original anoraks were coated with fish oil to keep them waterproof, this is no longer required due to improvements in waterproof materials! The social consequences of smelling of fish (to the already isolated anorak wearer) are best not thought about. In the 20th century, with the invention of nylon during the 1930s, it became possible to make modern anoraks, and with the addition of padding and suitable stitched logos, the rally jacket was born after the second world war.
