Visiting Doug in his home on the Longbridge Estate was a fascinating experience in itself. Whilst I had known vaguely that there was an area provided by Lord Austin for workers, I didn't know exactly where it was. Doug and his son told me the history of the estate and I have since learned more from the fascinating Austin Memories website at www. austinmemories.com. The estate came about because of the massive increase in the work force necessitated by the First World War, leading to a demand for local accommodation at a time when transportation was limited.
