The Mini Cooper 1071 S was launched in 1963: "I remember Stuart Turner bringing one to Oulton Park. I was racing a 997 Cooper for John Cooper. I got in and drove it as a road car and I thought it was magic." His first event in a Cooper S was in fact with 33 EJB in September 1963. "We won the the Tour de France Automobile. It was cashing in on the cycle race and it just went from circuit to circuit so it was easy to televise. The cars went round and round in circles. We went to all the famous circuits: Le Mans, Rouen and Pau, and the Niirburgring. In fact it was really what put the Mini on the map in France, not many people know that. Because it was televised in France for 20 minutes a day. For the first time ever motorsport outside Le Mans was televised."
