Most people would thank their lucky stars for finding a 40-year-old 1275GT in good condition for a fraction of the price it would cost to restore a tatty one. Yet 21-year-old Thomas Edmunds has experience on his side, thanks to being a trained motor mechanic and having a father (also called Tom, as was his father) who has restored several classics including a Mk2 Escort RS2000. Looks can be deceptive and their wise approach is that it's best to know every inch of it by stripping and rebuilding. Thomas had always wanted a Mini and initially set out to find one merely to tinker with. The GT seen here was located in Manchester and quickly snapped up. The condition of the Mini was surprisingly good, with only surface corrosion around the front end and outer sills. Under the bonnet lived a non-original 1275cc engine. Inside, there were tatty vinyl seats and a wooden dashboard.
