Much has been written about the early days of John Cooper's involvement with Minis, the Mini Cooper and the Cooper Car Company racing team, up to his involvement in the experimental 'Twini Mini' which almost took his life on the Kingston bypass, leading to a long period of convalescence. By the beginning of the 1970s the Cooper Fl team no longer existed, Leyland had taken over BMC and closed the Competitions Department and the Mini Cooper was no longer made in the UK. Was it time to start winding down his involvement in cars and motorsport? John Cooper moved to the Sussex coast, at Ferring, to take early retirement. However he soon heard of a British Leyland garage, Ferring Motors, for sale, and bought it, running it as a standard BL dealership.
