The term 'Flying Finns' was first coined by BMC Competitions Manager Stuart Turner in reference to Finnish rally aces Rauno Aaltonen and Timo Makinen after they both collected spectacular successes on international events during the early 1960s. For a land comprising just 5.4 million people Finland has produced a disproportionately high percentage of world championship Fl drivers including Kimi Raikkonen, Mika Salo and Keke Rosberg.
