My first recollection of the Mini was in the early 1960s, when one of the senior boys arrived outside the school gates in his parents' light blue car. A few years later a young lad from Sunderland joined my friendship group and was the proud owner of a new Mk2 Mini 1000. He was a keen driver and Mini mad. It was not long before I was navigating for him on club rallies and winning the occasional award. That young lad introduced me to his sister, and we became family, so Minis gave way to married life and a young family! Fast forward 17 or so years and my son acquired a 1981 Mini City. While he was learning to drive we took part in a London to Brighton Mini Run. He drove that car until it broke but he learned all about drum brakes!
