Since he was 13, in 1979, Phil has been into the Mod Revival in a big way: show-class Lambrettas included. He didn't get round to owning a Mini until he got a Mini 1000 in 1990. There seems to be no particular car identified with the 1960s Mod era but Mini's rise to stardom in that decade meant that anyone with an appreciation of cool would not hesitate to say 'yes' to BMC's cheap family transport that owed so much to chic continental influences. For the young and fashionable Mod of the time, getting £550 together for a new basic Mini, let alone about £750 for a new Cooper, was not really that easy as the average male weekly wage in the UK in 1966 was £23.47. In that year, the best ever for the English national team, pro footballers could look to earn a heady £100 a week.
