The throttle, choke and heater cables are parts of a Mini that are in constant use, yet they are usually forgotten about until something goes wrong. They require little routine servicing apart from a drop of oil on the ends of the cable where accessible. This ensures smooth operation and will lengthen cable life but, on many Minis, this will never actually be carried out. Despite this, the three cables that we are dealing with here today, namely the throttle, choke (where fitted) and heater cables, are usually very reliable in service. The.most common one to fail is the choke and this is largely down to abuse due to ignorance of the locking mechanism by earlier owners who tried to pull out or push the choke knob when in the locked position. This results in the locking function failing and, in the past, it was common to see a choke knob with a clothes peg holding it out when the engine was cold.
