Here at MiniWorld we always recommend having a Mini engine set up on a rolling road dynamometer, aka dyno. This is particularly important after a rebuild, or if any tuning has been carried out, and this includes even relatively simple mods and repairs such as changing an air filter, a carb or fitting a Stage 1 kit. A rolling road set-up will also often make a huge difference to the performance of a completely standard engine, even if it has been well set up at home. We proved this back in Keeping Your Mini Alive 2 when my own, then standard-engined, 998 Mini was given a before and after run on the rolling road prior to the installation of a Stage 1 kit. The Mini seemed to be running well before the session. On the first run it produced 39bhp and 58lb/ft torque. The mixture was found to be slightly out and was corrected for the second run. It made little difference to the figures with the bhp remaining the same and only lib/ft torque increase. The vacuum advance was found to be faulty and, once corrected, there was a 5bhp and 8lb/ft torque gain. The kind of faults found in that session illustrate the benefit of rolling road tuning.
