The low-down on fuel pumps

Until 1969 Minis were fitted with an SU electric fuel pump, mounted just below the tank on the rear subframes on saloons. When the Mk3 Mini came along, in late 1969, it had a mechanical pump mounted at the rear of the engine block, operated by the camshaft - strictly-speaking it is the side of the A-series but it is the rear when application is transverse as in Mini -although the 1275 Cooper S retained an electric pump. Apart from their different power source the pumps differ in that the SU electric pump is a 'pusher' i.e. it pushes the fuel from the tank towards the engine and the mechanical pump is a 'puller' in that it pulls the fuel from the tank to the engine. Injection Minis have a different system operating at higher pressure and the pump is mounted in the fuel tank.
