I would like to change my windscreen wiper motor on my 1976 Mini for a newer one as the original is somewhat juddery in operation. Is it possible to remove the motor without taking out the rack and removing the windscreen wipers? Firstly, check whether worn or hardened wiper blades are causing the judder. Contamination of the windscreen can also cause wiper judder so, if you have not already done so, clean the screen with something like Autoglym Glass Polish and clean or replace the wiper blades. To remove the wiper motor you need to undo the nut at the rack tube join, unscrew and remove the wiper motor bracket and you can then remove the motor and pull the rack out of the tube. If you use this method you will need to remove the wiper blades first. Alternatively, you can remove the cover from the front of the wiper motor, remove the nut and bracket and gently ease the motor downwards off the end of the rack.
