BACK IN TIME TO '59

It's just after 10 o'clock on 20 October 1959 and I'm making my way up the shallow steps of the world-famous Earl's Court Exhibition centre to visit the London Motor Show. Tomorrow the show will be officially opened by the Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan and, with a brace of exciting new models expected to grace the stands, my mind is full of expectation over how the Mini, BMC's revolutionary little car, will be received. This is Press Day when the doyens of the media, the paparazzi with their popping flash guns, and the TV news cameras are allowed free reign to roam the Motor Show stands, interviewing harassed publicity officers and admiring the dolled up girls who adorn the platforms.
