Alec Issigonis was the man behind the Mini. When asked by Leonard Lord to create a small, economical car for BMC, in the light of the 1956 Suez Crisis, his inherent genius and vast experience as a motor car designer came to the forefront. The Mini was revolutionary in its concept: his idea of a front-wheel drive peoples' car with a transversely-mounted engine and integrated transmission (which freed up cabin space), rubber-cone suspension and tiny 10-inch wheels shook up car design around the world and became the thing to copy Sadly MiniWorld didn't interview Sir Alec as he passed away in 1988, three years before MiniWorld was launched.
