Fatalities in U.S. mines at all-time low in 2009

U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) records show 16 people died in metal and nonmetal mining accidents while 18 people perished in coal mine-related accidents in 2009, for a combined 34 deaths, surpassing 2008's lowest-ever record of 52 mining fatalities. The worst accident in U.S. mining history, the Monongah Mine disaster in West Virginia, involved a methane gas explosion that killed 362 men and boys, (ME, Jan. 2010, page 33).
