In the dolorous history of British technological education much toil and virtue have been expended over many years, and other European countries view with astonishment the obsessions an controversies which rage even today. One such is to be found in Oriel's heart cry: "It seems difficult to persuade universities in this country what technology really is"-which itself is almost a mirror of Aitken's requiem. The problem is by no means confined to universities. Cherwell's speeches in the early 1950s tried to explain to a not unsymptathetic House of Lords the differences between a scientist, a technician and a technologist.
