'Innovation in Innovation': A Review of Henry Etzkowitz and Chunyan Zhou, The Triple Helix: University-Industry-Government Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Second Edition)

The concept of the Triple Helix Model was originally proposed by Henry Etzkowitz and Loet Leydesdorff (1995). Empirically, it draws on the innovative practice of both New England in the early 20* century and Silicon Valley since the 1970s. Theoretically, it draws on evolutional economics, sociology and public policy. The unique contribution of the triple helix model to innovation studies is its attention to the heightened role of the university in the transition to a knowledge-based society. Etzkowitz and Leydesdorff (2000) have further expounded the triple helix into a model of innovation and entrepreneurship for studying knowledge-based economies. In 2008, Etzkowitz (2008) published The Triple Helix: University-Industry-Government Innovation in Action, intending to provide a comprehensive elaboration of the triple helix model. The current book under review is its second edition, in which Chunyan Zhou joined as a co-author. She is among a few scholars who initially introduced the triple helix concept to China by translating The Triple Helix (1st edition) into Chinese language and publishing several articles about triple helix in Chinese in the 2000s.
