Multi-organizational collaborations are increasingly important in contem- porary science, but their formative processes have been neglected by scholars in the social studies of science. Based on an examination of 53 collaborations in physics and related dis- ciplines, we have found five types of formations. Collaborations that encountered greater difficulties in forming became more formal in their organization and management.
