In one of the five largest business mergers in US history, two telecommunications giants—Bell Atlantic and GTE Corp.—have agreed tentatively to combine their operations, creating the nation's biggest local-exchange carrier and second only to AT & T in total size. The companies reported 1997 combined revenues of approximately $53 billion and a current—as of July 29— combined market capitalization of $125 billion.
