Freescale Adds Smarts to Sensors Xtrinsic Embeds ColdFire into Accelerometers, Gyros, Other Sensors

Adding a new shade of meaning to the term "embedded processor," Freescale will begin putting its 32-bit ColdFire CPU into previously unintelligent sensor chips. The company's new Xtrinsic line of "smart" accelerometers, pressure sensors, gyros, magnetometers, and other sensor chips is aimed at smartphones and other mobile devices that now demand real-world awareness to augment their user interfaces. The proliferation of such sensors in small and performance-constrained devices drives the need for the sensors themselves to do some processing—or so Freescale hopes.
