One of the great paradoxes of our age is that moving digital data from Point A to Point B requires so much advanced processing power. What used to be accomplished with simple copper wire is now handled by fantastically complex microprocessors.rnComputer networking was originally designed to be simple; the computers at the ends of the network were complex. Internet Protocol (IP) packets come self-addressed, and routing them to their destinations is trivial.rnYet, packet processing and network routing are now the domain of high-end microprocessors. And a fine job they do of it, too. Their embedded intelligence has led to a much better, quicker, and more reliable Internet and the myriad new businesses that depend on it. Network plumbing has gone from lead-pipe cinch to gold-plated business opportunity.
