In the Chinese zodiac, the year of the dragon ended early in 2013, but in the mobile market, the dragon still rules. China has become the world's largest market for smartphones and tablets, and its citizens are shifting from foreign phones to devices built in China, often using Chinese components. The country is also building and exporting low-cost devices to developing countries, tilting the balance of technology and pricing away from the heavily marketed Galaxy and iPhone. Based in nearby Taiwan, MediaTek has grown rapidly because of its success in the Chinese market. For years, the company has dominated the market for low-cost basic phones, and after moving into low-cost smartphones in 2011, it already ranks second in application processors.
