AMD Reveals First Puma Chips

Although AMD's new business model is designed to reduce its dependence on the PC market, the company still earns most of its revenue from PCs. As such, it remains on the PC-processor treadmill and must deliver new products into multiple segments yearly. In a keynote at the APU13 developer conference, AMD updated its roadmap with two new low-power 28nm processors: code-named Beema and Mullins, these products will serve the tablet, convertible, ultramobile, and value-tablet markets. The company also provided an official launch date for the mainstream Kaveri, its first processor to support HSA features. Beema and Mullins will offer two or four "Puma" CPU cores as well as integrated GPUs derived from AMD's Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture in its Radeon products. Puma is the successor to Jaguar, which serves in the company's SoC designs (see MPR 8/28/12, "AMD Jaguar Leaps Ahead"). The company positions Beema and Mullins at the low end of its line, offering lower power but less performance than Kaveri. They will compete against Intel's Pentium, Celeron, and Atom lines.
