A Freescale has lived up to promises it made last summer by updating its QorIQ line with Layerscape, a new three-plane architecture based on ARM Cortex CPUs. At the recent Linley Tech Processor Conference, the company introduced the first three processors in its LS1 family, which integrates ARM's low-end Cortex-A7 CPU. These processors will sample in early 2014. The LS1 family will emphasize efficient use of silicon and low power. The baseline capabilities of the entry-level dual-core LS1 include virtualization and advanced DDR3L/4 memory support. Some configurations of the chip will sell for $12 in 10,000-unit volumes; this price is even lower than those of the currently available QorIQ P1 products, which the LS1 will replace.
