On the Gartner hype cycle, autonomous vehicles have passed peak hype and are wallowing in the trough of disillusionment. Some experts now say that self-driving cars are 10 years off, which in tech speak means "I have no idea when, but it's well beyond my planning horizon." But that doesn't imply nothing will happen until autonomous vehicles suddenly appear in showrooms in January 2030. Instead, a tremendous amount of processor, sensor, software, and system development will occur over the next decade, gradually enabling more capabilities that over time will see broader deployment.
